Advancing Addiction Treatment: Why Evidence-Based Care Needs Technology at Its Core

By Tricia Zerger, Vice President, Human Services Strategy

Addiction treatment is at a crossroads. While science is clear on what works, many organizations face challenges in delivering consistent, high-quality care. Fragmented systems, staff shortages and administrative burdens often stand in the way of applying evidence-based protocols like medication-assisted treatment (MAT), detox plans and structured recovery programs. Barriers like transportation, co-occurring conditions or social challenges can make the path to recovery even harder.

So how do we close the gap?

The answer lies in technology-enabled platforms that bring evidence-based standards into everyday practice. By embedding proven protocols directly into electronic health records (EHRs), organizations can streamline workflows, reduce errors and make care more consistent across providers and care settings.

Why Evidence-Based Addiction Treatment Matters

Evidence-based practices aren’t just best-in-class—they’re essential to the success of modern addiction treatment. They improve safety, boost patient engagement and most importantly, deliver better outcomes. Yet all too often, access to these approaches depends on the luck of geography or the resources of a given provider.

Technology helps change that equation.

By digitizing and automating protocols, organizations can ensure that every clinician, whether in a rural clinic or an urban recovery center, has access to the same tools and standards. People benefit from care that is both consistent and personalized, with whole-person care at the center—addressing their addiction along with co-occurring behavioral health, physical health needs and social supports.

Key Capabilities Driving Better Outcomes

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Telehealth capabilities expand access to MAT, ensuring patients can receive critical support no matter where they’re located. Tools like electronic pill bottles and adherence monitoring help track compliance in real time, while centralized EHR integration streamlines dosing and scheduling. Telehealth has shown to improve treatment engagement, and reduce the risk of fatal overdose, particularly for individuals in rural areas or with limited transportation.

Digital Detox Protocols
Managing detox is one of the most delicate phases of treatment. Technology-supported workflows allow teams to digitally track protocols, monitor individual progress and maintain safety standards. Integration with EHR systems reduces errors, while holistic assessments ensure physical, mental and social needs are addressed throughout the process.

Recovery Plans
Sustained recovery in a world filled with temptation requires more than a discharge note. Digital platforms enable individualized recovery plans that track progress over time and integrate support systems—from therapy and vocational programs to peer-to-peer digital recovery support services.

These tools extend engagement beyond the clinic, providing continuity and accountability.

ASAM CONTINUUM™ Integration
ASAM CONTINUUM™ is an electronic assessment tool that allows clinicians, counselors, and other staff to leverage a computerized clinical decision support system (CDSS) to assess individuals with addictive substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. Automate assessments and ensure placement decisions are evidence-based, consistent and aligned with national standards. This approach supports whole-person care by linking treatment planning with broader assessments of health and social needs.

The Benefits of Technology-Enabled Addiction Care

When evidence-based practices are embedded into healthcare technology, the impact is clear:

  • Improved coordination across providers and care settings
  • Reduced duplicative work and clinical errors
  • Easier compliance and reporting
  • Expanded access for patients in remote or underserved areas
  • A stronger foundation for whole-person care that connects addiction treatment to mental health, physical health and social services

A Path Forward for Addiction Treatment

The need for enhanced addiction treatment is urgent. Addiction rates remain high, yet too many individuals are left behind due to gaps in access or inconsistencies in care delivery. Technology-enabled platforms provide a way forward by embedding evidence-based protocols directly into the clinical workflow, ensuring that every person receives the right treatment at the right time.

By uniting MAT, detox management, recovery planning and ASAM CONTINUUM™ integration within one platform, organizations can strengthen outcomes, reduce barriers and deliver truly whole-person care. The future of addiction treatment depends not just on what we know works—but on how well we put it into practice.
