Embracing AI in Healthcare: Overcoming Reluctance and Unlocking Potential

By Chris Yakscoe, Senior Director & General Manager, Bells

Augmented intelligence (AI) is rapidly proving itself as an integral part of healthcare. From optimizing a vast array of staff workflows to helping providers improve patient outcomes, the potential of AI is immense. Yet, despite its transformative capabilities, AI still faces a significant hurdle in broad healthcare adoption: reluctance.

Understanding the Reluctance Around AI

Reluctance is not new to healthcare. In the centuries-long history of medicine, we've long battled misconceptions and stereotypes in all forms. In the same way, AI can be met with skepticism and fear. It’s understandable why. As British writer Arthur C. Clarke famously said, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

Artificial and augmented intelligence are no different from any other form of technological advancement. And within the halls of the healthcare community a certain amount of skepticism is warranted.

People worry about job displacement, loss of personal connection, privacy concerns and the ethical implications of relying on technology for care. These are all valid and addressing them is critical to the success of AI integration in healthcare.

Some of the fear stems from a lack of understanding. Historically, innovations—even obviously beneficial ones—have encountered resistance, especially when they challenge the status quo. Even the practice of handwashing was met with derision. In 1848 Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian doctor, championed handwashing to reduce maternity ward deaths at the Vienna General Hospital. Astoundingly, the medical community downplayed the importance of clean hands until handwashing became universally mandatory in the 1980s.

For AI, the reluctance manifests in concerns about dehumanization, job loss and the complexity of adopting new technology. It's important to recognize that while these worries are understandable, they can also hinder progress and block the significant advantages AI offers.

Drawing Parallels: AI and Mental Health Concerns

The reluctance associated with AI parallels concerns seen in mental health. In both cases, misconceptions drive fear. The reluctance around mental health originates from historical misunderstandings and fear of the unknown. For AI, it’s much of the same.

In addressing mental health stigmas, strategies such as education, advocacy and policy reform have proven effective. Similarly, combating the reluctance of AI requires transparency, demonstrable benefits and strong guidelines around ethics and privacy.

By educating both staff and the wider community, we can shift perceptions from fear to acceptance.

Encouraging AI Adoption in Healthcare

Once an organization commits to the potential of AI, the next step is implementation. Interestingly, many staff members may already be using AI in some capacity—whether optimizing their clinical notes or improving reimbursement processes. However, without a structured AI strategy tailored to your organization, you're likely missing the full spectrum of benefits AI can provide.

The emotional journey of adopting innovations often follows a familiar pattern, sometimes referred to as the "hype curve." Initial excitement peaks when the technology is introduced, only to dip as challenges or frustrations emerge. This is a critical phase that requires thoughtful change management and ongoing support.

A key to overcoming this dip is a robust partnership with a technology provider who understands both the technical and strategic aspects of implementation. Through careful planning, comprehensive training, pilot testing, and addressing early issues, organizations can smooth the transition and sustain momentum. Quick wins—such as showing how AI can save time or enhance care quality—can also help reenergize teams and demonstrate the value of the new solution.

Grassroots Leadership: Building Enthusiasm for AI

One of the most effective ways to foster AI enthusiasm is through grassroots leadership. Identify the champions within your organization—those who are naturally excited about technology and can help bring others along on the journey. These leaders can be powerful advocates for AI, particularly when they can demonstrate tangible benefits, like saving time on clinical notes or improving the quality of patient care.

When other staff see their peers leaving work earlier, or completing tasks faster due to AI, they may become more open to exploring it themselves. This kind of peer-driven momentum can be invaluable in easing the transition and helping others overcome initial resistance.

From AI Adoption to Onboarding

To truly integrate AI into your organization, it’s helpful to think of the process not as a one-time adoption, but as an ongoing onboarding experience. AI is, in effect, another member of your team—a system designed to do the work of many, enhance performance and streamline processes. Approaching AI adoption with the same care and attention you'd apply to onboarding a new employee fosters a culture of collaboration and excitement rather than anxiety.

By treating AI as a trusted team member, with dedicated support and clear expectations, the entire organization can better embrace its potential. AI is not just a tool—it's an assistant or sidekick in delivering high-quality care and improving operational efficiency.

Conclusion: Unlocking AI’s Full Potential

To effectively combat the reluctance surrounding AI adoption in healthcare, it's essential to address concerns head-on through education, transparency and engagement. Just as misconceptions around mental health are mitigated through awareness and advocacy, AI adoption requires clear communication about its benefits and ethical considerations. Demonstrating how AI can enhance care, reduce workload and improve outcomes can foster acceptance. Implementing AI should be treated like onboarding a new team member—engaging champions within the organization to build excitement and trust.

By aligning AI with organizational goals and ensuring robust support, the reluctance can be transformed into endless opportunity.
