National Recovery Month: Celebrating Hope, Healing and Resilience

By Neal Tilghman, Senior Director and GM Addictions and Mental Health

Every September, National Recovery Month becomes a focal point as we come together to celebrate the efforts of all who are recovering from mental health and substance use disorders. This annual observance, led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), aims to promote evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, while also highlighting the strength of the recovery community and the service providers who make healing possible. The theme for this year, “Recovery. Hope. Healing.,” encapsulates the essence of the recovery journey and the hope it brings to individuals, families and communities nationwide.

According to SAMHSA, 3 out of 10 people in the United States have struggled with mental health, drugs, or alcohol at some point in their lives. Despite the prevalence of these challenges, recovery is attainable. And, mercifully, many are finding their way back to wellness.

In fact, two-thirds (66%) of adults who have experienced mental health challenges consider themselves to be in recovery. Additionally, 70% of adults who have faced substance use problems identify as being in recovery. These figures represent an inspiring community of individuals who are actively reclaiming their lives through recovery.

The Role of Healthcare Providers in Recovery

Behind every successful recovery story are the unsung heroes—healthcare providers, counselors, peer support specialists, and advocates—who dedicate their lives to helping others heal. These professionals play a crucial role in delivering evidence-based treatments that pave the way for lasting recovery. In 2020, SAMHSA reported that more than 4 million adults received treatment for substance use disorders and over 41 million adults accessed mental health services during that same year.

Leveraging Technology for Effective Addiction Treatment

The integration of technology is revolutionizing addiction treatment. By offering a comprehensive, person-centered approach, a robust technology platform allows healthcare providers to track patient data across multiple care settings, streamline regulatory compliance and enhance collaboration.

Solutions like those from Netsmart support the needed expansion of medication-assisted treatment and the ability to seamlessly integrate physical and behavioral health. All while ensuring efficient workflows and better patient outcomes through real-time analytics and interoperability across care providers.

Reducing Stigma and Encouraging Support

While the numbers highlight the scale of mental health and substance use issues, they also emphasize the need to reduce the stigma surrounding these conditions. Our EveryDayMatters Foundation plays a vital role in this effort, offering a platform for individuals to share their recovery stories, regardless of background or community.

The foundation’s mission is to inspire and celebrate awareness while breaking down barriers to treatment. Importantly, you don’t need to be a healthcare professional to provide support. Small, simple gestures—like checking in on loved ones—can have a profoundly meaningful impact on someone’s recovery journey.

A Time for Hope and Reflection

As we honor National Recovery Month, it’s important to remember that recovery is not a one-time achievement, but an ongoing process of hope, healing and personal growth. Whether someone is just beginning their journey or has been in recovery for years, every step forward is a testament to their resilience and the collective belief that recovery is achievable for all.

Let’s come together this September is a chance to join and celebrate those in recovery, support the healthcare professionals who make it possible and continue striving toward a society where recovery is a noble outcome for all.
