Dr. Ian Chuang Joins Netsmart as Senior Vice President, Healthcare Informatics and Chief Medical Officer
Brings Strong Expertise in Physical Health and Clinical Decision Support for Converging Healthcare Ecosystems
Overland Park, Kan., May 6, 2013 – Netsmart, the leading provider of clinical solutions for health and human services organizations nationwide, further advanced its clinical and integrated care knowledge base with the addition of Ian Chuang, M.D., M.S., F.C.F.P. as senior vice president, healthcare Informatics and chief medical officer.
“Dr. Chuang’s background in physical health and expertise in clinical data and information management is an ideal combination as we help our clients optimize the effectiveness and broaden the scope of care they provide in the coordinated care environment,” said Michael Valentine, chief executive officer, Netsmart.
“Healthcare must improve outside the walls of traditional medical environments,” said Dr. Chuang. “Netsmart is committed to helping its clients in new ways -- mobile solutions, physical health integration, Points of View (POVs) and other innovations to help providers furnish recovery-based care. I’m excited to join the company that is forging the path to the future for its clients while at the same time providing them with tools they need to furnish high quality care today. I don’t believe we can completely impact and improve on physical health without addressing the overlapping impact of behavioral health on the individual.”
Dr. Chuang joins Netsmart from Lockton Benefit Group in Kansas City, Mo., where he served as senior vice president, health risk management. He previously led the development of care management and clinical decision support systems at CIGNA Corporation. Prior to that, he was a director and vice president at Cerner Corporation, where he led initiatives ranging from a systems-based care transformation service with focus on evidence-based practice to a next-generation CDS system with context-sensitive clinical information presentation and viewing.
He has also held clinical leadership positions at TherapyEdge, Inc., Click4Care, McKessonHBOC, Wellport Health Plan and HealthSource-Provident Administrators, Inc.
“I look forward to working with Dr. Chuang as he brings a strong physical health perspective and knowledge in clinical decision support and predictive analytics. This will contribute greatly to our key initiatives in these critical areas,” said Dennis Morrison, Ph.D, Netsmart’s chief clinical officer. Drs. Chuang and Morrison will work collaboratively as senior clinical leaders as Netsmart charts a path for its clients toward coordinated, integrated care.
Dr. Chuang received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science degree in Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin. He currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Informatics, School of Medicine, at the University
of Missouri in Kansas City. He also continues to engage with public-private sector efforts around data standards and quality, currently as a member of the National Quality Forum Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC).
“Dr. Chuang brings outstanding depth and variety of experience to Netsmart as we develop next-generation clinical solutions against a backdrop of complex industry requirements and growing convergence of care,” said Valentine.”Our clients depend on us to build solutions today for tomorrow’s challenges. Dr. Chuang will lead us in doing just that.”
