Netsmart and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention Announce Partnership to Improve Suicide Risk Assessment Tools

Integration of suicide risk reduction technologies into EHRs to serve as national model

Washington, D.C., May 5, 2014 – Netsmart and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance) today announced a partnership designed to significantly advance the suicide prevention field’s risk reduction technologies.

Netsmart and the Action Alliance will initially collaborate to provide suicide risk-related clinical decision support tools that can be incorporated into electronic health records (EHRs).

The partnership’s long-term goals are to implement known suicide reduction technologies into EHRs to guide clinical decision making and help clinicians and counselors as they work to save the lives of thousands each year, and to develop and promote standards that can be used across the industry.

The partnership will focus on advancing one of the central priorities of the Action Alliance – to transform health systems to reduce suicide and improve care. This effort marks Netsmart’s continued commitment to provide leading-edge clinical solutions for behavioral health provider organizations nationwide. Netsmart clients help improve  the quality of life for more than 25 million people each day.

The two organizations will also develop and deliver suicide prevention alerts and reminders. These tools will help to disseminate strategic suicide prevention communications via clinical social media and e-learning channels to Netsmart clients and Action Alliance partners nationwide.

“We look forward to partnering with Netsmart on progressive and innovative approaches for early identification, ongoing intervention and more effective tracking of individuals at risk for suicide. Netsmart’s strength is its proven ability to develop tools that in this case will enable more targeted care for people struggling with suicide,” said Doryn Chervin, Dr.P.H., executive secretary of the Action Alliance and vice president and senior scientist in the Education Development Center, Inc.’s Health and Human Development Division. “The Action Alliance continues to forge ahead with the goal of saving 20,000 lives in five years. Partnering with Netsmart will help us build towards the goal of ending this tragic event in families and communities across the U.S.”

“We are pleased to work with the Action Alliance in a concerted, pragmatic effort to provide clinicians and counselors with tools and information as they strive to reduce the incidence of suicides,” said Michael Valentine, chief executive officer, Netsmart. “The Alliance’s view of suicide as a public health issue and development of a national strategy for suicide prevention demonstrate its passion and commitment to addressing our nation’s tenth leading cause of death, and which has a significant ripple effect on families, friends and entire communities.”

In addition, Netsmart will use its benchmarking and analytics expertise to develop advanced measures to look at the impact of organizations who have adopted the Action Alliance’s Zero Suicide approach to care. The Zero Suicide initiative is a comprehensive approach for health care settings incorporating the best and most promising practices to identify people at risk and improve care to reduce and prevent suicide. This initiative builds on the momentum of a paper released by the Action Alliance’s Clinical Care and Intervention Task Force in 2011, Suicide Care in Systems Framework.  This approach represents a commitment to patient safety—the most fundamental responsibility of health care. The goal of the initiative is zero suicides, simply because there is no other number that is acceptable.
