Netsmart Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Community Mental Health Act
Landmark Legislation Set Foundation that Drives Netsmart to Advocate for Improved Care and Enlightened Awareness for Those Living with Mental Health Issues
Las Vegas, Nev., April 8, 2013 – Netsmart, the leading provider of clinical solutions for health and human services organizations nationwide, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Community Mental Health Act of 1963 (CMHA) as part of its presence at the 2013 National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare Conference, held April 8-10 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Community Mental Health Act ushered in deinstitutionalization by providing federal funding for community mental health centers in the U.S. This critical legislation was passed as part of President John F. Kennedy's “New Frontier” and shaped the last 50 years of American history.
“The CMHA represented a new era of to delivering care to those living with mental health concerns. In recognition of this anniversary and as part of our participation in the National Council conference, Netsmart will pay tribute to the CMHA in our booth and in our ongoing work,” said Kevin Scalia, Netsmart executive vice president, Corporate Development. “We are committed to continued advocacy and leadership in public policy legislation to support the missions of health and human services providers. Our own policy efforts include ongoing work to expand Meaningful Use eligibility to correct the undue omission of some segments of behavioral health providers from the HITECH Act. We’re pleased to partner and collaborate with other industry leaders, including National Council, to do what is right for those who most need our support.”
“Netsmart is a true partner for health and human services providers,” says The Hon. M. Joseph Rocks, chief executive officer at NHS Human Services, a Lafayette Hill, Penn.-based community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the special needs of more than 50,000 children and adults annually. “Not only are they committed to services and solutions that support the work we do and those we serve, but they take that commitment one step further and push for awareness and acceptance of all areas of health and human services. Their partnership goes beyond simply being a vendor, and our industry is better because of their work.”
Netsmart’s support of health and human services led to the creation of EveryDay Matters and the EveryDay Matters Foundation, established for behavioral and public health organizations and consumers to learn from each other and share their causes and stories. EveryDay Matters provides a forum to debunk myths about mental and public health issues and encourage inspiration, enlightenment, questions, opinions, and dialog to eliminate barriers and celebrate successes. The EveryDay Matters Foundation was established for organizations within the community to request funds for their cause, or to help fund technology that advances the way care is delivered. Netsmart will celebrate the second annual National EveryDay Matters Day on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.
“We know our clients provide vital, life-saving services that play such an important role for the community as a whole. Because we believe so completely in what they do and how they serve, we are motivated by an obligation to do all we can to best serve them,” continued Scalia.
Netsmart recognizes the anniversary of the Community Mental Health Act and other significant milestones in mental health history in a mural wall as part of its exhibit at the National Council Conference.
