Avatar Addiction Severity Index (ASI)

The ASI can be used to explore problems for any adult who reports substance abuse as his or her major problem.

The ASI is available as a module of Avatar. The assessment has approximately 200 questions and is often performed during pre-admission in order to determine the appropriate
level of care for a client. This clientcentered interview is designed to address a number of potential problem areas that substance abuse patients face, and includes subscales for:

  • Medical status
  • Employment and support
  • Drug use
  • Alcohol use
  • Legal status
  • Family/social status
  • Psychiatric status

Business Benefits

Avatar ASI is an overview tool. It offers measurable scoring of factors that determine the severity of addiction problems. The ASI is derived from the public domain. As such, questions, answers and scoring are not editable. The interview is easy to complete with the user, selecting from drop down dictionaries, clicking radio buttons and entering narrative text for comments. The counselor obtains clinical information on recent (past 30 days) and lifetime problems in all of the problem areas.

ASI Scoring and Rating Scales

Counselors have the ability to track a number of rating scales in the ASI for each section. These include:

  • Interviewer Addiction Severity Rating Scale (0 – 9 scale).
  • Interview Confident Rating Scale for interviewers rating
of the client’s understanding and truthfulness (yes/no questions).
  • Patient Rating Scale for clients rating their addiction
    severity (0 – 4 scale).
  • Composite Scores: Thesescores are based on a combination of items in each problem area that are capable of showing change. Composite scores are measures of problem severity during the prior 30 days and are calculated by specific mechanisms outlined in the industry standard ASI documentation.

The ASI provides a narrative of the interview and explains scoring in a meaningful manner. All ASI data is stored in SQL tables that are accessible by any commercially available report
writer, such as Crystal Reports.

Note: ASI was first developed in 1980 by TRI Executive Director A. Thomas McLellan and collaborators from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Studies of Addiction.
